Hallux Rigidus - Arthritis of the Great Toe Joint

Hallux rigidus is a form of degenerative arthritis that affects the metatarsophalangeal (MPJ) joint at the base of the big toe. It causes stiffness, swelling, and pain, especially during walking or bending the toe. Over time, the joint may become increasingly rigid, limiting motion and making everyday activities uncomfortable.

Hallux rigidus often develops gradually and is commonly caused by wear-and-tear, injury, or structural abnormalities in the foot. Early treatment can help slow progression, while advanced cases may require surgical intervention to restore mobility and relieve pain.

Treatments

  • Custom-made orthotics
  • LP PRP combined with Hyaluronic Acid Therapy
  • A2M Injections
  • Diet adjustment, with a focus on anti-inflammatory nutrition
  • Prescription medication such as anti-inflammatory drugs or steroid injections
  • Functional movement and exercise
  • Surgical intervention for the most serious cases of hallux rigidus—such as metatarsophalangeal (MPJ) joint procedures—may be necessary to relieve pain, correct deformities, and restore function when conservative treatments are no longer effective.
